About this piece:

The artist Yayoi Kusama credits her famous dot obsession to a vision she had as a little girl on her parents’ flower farm in Japan. She said she was staring one day at the flowers and they became a sea of dots, then she became one too. Just one dot amongst infinity in what she calls “self-obliteration”. But I think if she grew up in the Catskills she might have been obsessed with the super long rectangles between the trees. Because I stare at those often and feel my eyes cross and I wonder if I’m looking at the forest, or the trees, or just endless ribbons of color.
